- Winter temperatures plunge to -14C in Lesotho
- Afriski resort offers slopes, snow parks and ski school
- Entire nation sits above 1,000 metres
WHEN most travellers picture Africa, they imagine deserts, beaches and wildlife safaris. Yet in the small mountain kingdom of Lesotho, visitors can find snow-capped peaks, freezing air and even ski slopes.
Lesotho, often called the ‘Kingdom in the Sky’, is the only nation in the world located entirely above 1,000 metres. In winter, between June and September, temperatures can drop as low as -14C, with heavy snow covering the Maluti and Drakensberg ranges.
Skiing in the mountains
Lesotho is home to the Afriski Mountain Resort, perched at 3,222 metres. The resort features 1.8 kilometres of ski runs, a tow lift and rope, a snow park, a ski school, children’s areas, rental outlets and après-ski activities.
Travellers often compare the resort to a small Alpine getaway. One visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: ‘Both young and old enjoyed the fun on the snow. Very cold and wet but good fun – I would recommend that they extend the restaurant, as it is overcrowded. Very good entertainment and a good drive from Clarens in South Africa. Snow experience was exciting.’
Africa’s coldest country
Filmmaker Steven Ndukwu, who documented his travels to Lesotho, said of standing in the Maluti highlands: ‘I’m standing right now at 3,222 metres above sea level and I think I’m closer to God right now. This is the highest country in the world and the coldest in Africa.’
While Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro is famous for its icy summit, Lesotho is unique in offering winter holidays where skiing, snowboarding and snow play are all part of the experience.
Beyond the slopes
Lesotho’s appeal is not limited to snow sports. Visitors can trek mountain trails, explore remote highland villages and ride Basotho ponies across rugged terrain. The country’s high altitude ensures crisp winter air and stunning scenery, making it an increasingly popular alternative to traditional African holidays.
Access is straightforward, with roads linking Lesotho to South Africa. International visitors usually arrive in Johannesburg before driving to the mountain passes.
Africa’s alpine surprise
For travellers seeking an experience that blends African culture with Alpine-style adventure, Lesotho offers something truly unique. Its mountains deliver snow, ski slopes and winter charm that challenge common images of Africa.
