Keypoints:

  • Babajide Sanwo-Olu urges global investors to back African cities
  • The Lagos governor argues urban development can accelerate economic growth
  • Experts say strong governance and infrastructure remain critical to success

LAGOS State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on global investors to increase their commitment to Africa’s rapidly expanding cities, arguing in a Newsweek opinion article that they could become one of the world’s most important engines of future economic growth.

The appeal comes as Africa experiences some of the fastest urban population growth in the world, placing mounting pressure on governments to expand housing, transport, energy and public services while creating new opportunities for investment and innovation. It also builds on Lagos’ rising economic profile, with the state recently recording a $259bn economy and ranking as Africa’s second-largest city economy. In his essay for Newsweek, Sanwo-Olu contends that well-planned cities can stimulate entrepreneurship, create jobs and strengthen economic competitiveness across the continent.

Newsweek op-ed highlights urban potential

In the opinion piece, Sanwo-Olu argues that African cities should be viewed not merely as centres facing development challenges but as emerging hubs of commerce, technology and industrial expansion.

He writes that sustained investment in transport infrastructure, affordable housing, digital connectivity and public services could help unlock long-term economic gains while supporting rapidly growing populations. The governor also encourages international partners to look beyond outdated assumptions about African markets and recognise their evolving economic potential.

His intervention reflects a broader discussion among policymakers and investors about the role cities will play in shaping Africa’s future development.

Lagos presented as an example

Drawing on developments in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu argues that partnerships between governments, development finance institutions and private-sector investors can help cities finance major infrastructure projects and improve competitiveness.

He maintains that strategic planning and long-term investment can enable metropolitan areas to adapt to demographic growth while attracting business activity and innovation. That vision is reflected in ongoing transport projects, including the expansion of Lagos’ rail network aimed at transforming urban mobility and easing congestion.

Urban growth brings opportunities and risks

Independent projections by the United Nations indicate that Africa’s urban population is expected to continue expanding rapidly in the coming decades, making the continent one of the world’s fastest-growing urban regions. The World Bank has similarly highlighted the potential for well-managed cities to boost productivity and support economic transformation.

At the same time, economists and urban planners caution that rapid growth can intensify congestion, housing shortages, infrastructure deficits and environmental pressures if investment and governance fail to keep pace with demand.

The pace and quality of development also vary considerably between countries and municipalities, meaning successful urbanisation depends on effective institutions, sound fiscal management and consistent long-term planning.

A call to rethink investment priorities

Sanwo-Olu argues in his Newsweek article that treating Africa’s urban transformation as an investment opportunity rather than simply a development challenge could benefit both the continent and the wider global economy.

In the opinion piece, he argues that greater investment in resilient infrastructure, technology and public services could position African cities as influential centres of innovation, trade and economic activity.

Whether that vision is realised will depend on policy implementation, financing and governance across diverse national contexts. Nevertheless, the governor’s intervention contributes to an expanding debate over how Africa’s cities can shape future patterns of global investment and growth.
