Keypoints:
- KFC Africa promises October recipe reveal
- Long-guarded chicken formula to be disclosed
- Brand insists mystique will remain intact
IN a decision that has stunned the fast-food industry, KFC Africa has announced that it will disclose its long-guarded secret recipe on Wednesday, October 8. The move will end decades of speculation surrounding the formula behind its iconic Original Recipe® chicken.
The announcement was confirmed by Grant Macpherson, Chief Marketing and Digital Officer of KFC Africa, in a statement distributed via APO Group.
A recipe shrouded in mystery
Since the brand first entered the African market in 1971, the secret recipe has become the cornerstone of KFC’s global identity. Only a handful of individuals have ever been entrusted with the complete formula, sparking countless attempts by competitors, enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists to decode it.
‘People have been asking us for years about our secret recipe,’ Macpherson said. ‘They’ve guessed, they’ve pleaded and they’ve done their best to copy it. And now we’ve decided the world can finally share it. We think it will be better for everyone if it’s out in the open.’
He added that the company’s reasons for the reveal would not be disclosed until the official announcement in October.
The end of an era or a bold step?
KFC acknowledges that some customers may fear the disclosure could undermine the mystique that has helped it become South Africa’s largest quick-service restaurant brand. However, Macpherson dismissed this concern.
‘There’s obviously going to be a lot of speculation about why we would give away this precious asset, and why now,’ he said. ‘We don’t think it will kill the mystique, but everything will become clear on 8 October. Until then, all the guesses and opinions will be just that.’
KFC Africa’s role on the continent
KFC Africa has grown into the leading quick-service restaurant chain across sub-Saharan Africa, operating more than 1,400 outlets in 22 countries. The brand serves millions daily while also investing in social programmes.
Its Streetwise Academy provides accredited training for staff, achieving a 75 percent promotion and retention rate, while the Add Hope programme delivers more than 30 million meals to vulnerable children annually. The chain also supports grassroots sport through Mini Cricket, South Africa’s largest youth cricket initiative, reaching over 120,000 players.
KFC emphasises that its mission goes beyond food, with education and youth empowerment initiatives such as the Ikusasa Lethu scholarships aimed at building long-term opportunities. With over 40,000 employees, the brand positions itself as a driver of both business and community transformation.
Anticipation builds for October reveal
Until the official unveiling, speculation about what the closely guarded recipe truly contains is likely to intensify. For now, KFC Africa insists only that the timing is deliberate and that the reveal will mark an important new chapter in its relationship with customers.
‘History will decide whether or not this is a masterstroke,’ Macpherson said. ‘But we believe it will be good for us and, most importantly, good for South Africa.’
