THE president of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Nick Mwendwa (pictured) was on Friday arrested over alleged graft in the body, just a day after the Sports Minister, Amina Mohamed, announced the removal from office of all FKF officials pending investigations.
Mwendwa was arrested in the capital, Nairobi, where Harambee Stars are preparing for their last 2022 World Cup Qualification match against Rwanda.
While announcing the removal of Mwendwa from office, Mohamed said FKF had ‘failed to account for all the monies allocated to it by the government.’
She directed authorities in the country to carry out further investigation to establish the extent to which the misappropriation of funds in FKF may have occurred with a view of prosecuting those who may be found culpable.
A caretaker committee was appointed to manage the affairs of FKF for a period of six months.
An adamant Mwendwa however announced that he was still in charge of the football body, urging the ministry to conduct investigations to completion before making any decision.
‘We, the ousted FKF officials, shall remain in charge, and football will continue in this country under our leadership,’ he said.
FIFA threatened to ban Kenya for undue government interference in the internal affairs of FKF.
