IN a bid to promote peace and stability on the African continent, Japan has pledged around $500 million in financial support to be spent in the next three years. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made the announcement during his meeting with Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, as part of his multi-national tour to Africa.
During the meeting, Kishida and Akufo-Addo emphasised the importance of providing transparent and fair development finance. ‘Economic growth cannot be achieved without peace and stability,’ Kishida told a news conference.
Kyodo News reported that the financial support will be utilised in various areas, including infrastructure development, healthcare, and education. The support is aimed at creating an enabling environment for African countries to achieve sustainable development and long-term prosperity.
Kishida, who is on a tour of Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and Mozambique, will also visit Singapore before returning to Japan. The commitment to Africa follows a similar pledge by Japan in 2019, where the country pledged to invest $20bn in the continent over three years.
