A GROUNDBREAKING collaborative effort led by Interpol, named Africa Cyber Surge II, has proven highly effective in the battle against cybercrime across the African continent. This joint endeavour, supported by global and local law enforcement agencies as well as cybersecurity firms from the private sector, has culminated in the apprehension of 14 individuals suspected of engaging in cyber-criminal activities. Moreover, the operation successfully identified and addressed over 20,000 suspicious cyber networks responsible for financial losses surpassing $40 million.

Initiated in April 2023 and funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, the German Federal Foreign Office, and the Council of Europe, Africa Cyber Surge II encompassed a network of 25 African countries. This multinational coalition united the efforts of Interpol, Afripol, and prominent cybersecurity companies from the private sector. Its primary mission revolved around countering a range of cyber threats including phishing, extortion, online scams, and business email compromise. The operation’s impact was widely felt, spanning nations such as Cameroon, Nigeria, and Mauritius, leading to the significant dismantling of malicious online infrastructures.

A pivotal partner in this endeavour, Group-IB, worked alongside Interpol to provide essential insights from its threat intelligence database. This data focused on pinpointing malicious infrastructure within Africa. Armed with these insights, Interpol member countries across Africa executed targeted takedown operations against cyber-criminals.

Beyond the tangible operational achievements, the Africa Cyber Surge II initiative emphasised the paramount importance of knowledge-sharing. In a recent blog post, Group-IB underscored the participation of experts from diverse backgrounds in events and discussions, fostering insights into addressing cyber threats.

The achievements of Africa Cyber Surge II build upon the successes of its predecessor, Africa Cyber Surge, which aimed to uncover compromised infrastructure and cyber-criminal activities within the region.

This ongoing collaboration between Interpol, Afripol, and key private sector partner Group-IB underscores a shared commitment to eradicating cybercrime in Africa while simultaneously bolstering global cybersecurity endeavours.
