GUINEA is accelerating an ambitious effort to build a national mining champion, with state-owned Nimba Mining Company targeting annual bauxite production of at least 14m tonnes as it prepares to expand into alumina, gold and base metals.
The strategy marks a potentially significant shift for the world’s leading bauxite exporter. Rather than relying overwhelmingly on foreign-controlled mining groups, Conakry wants a commercially driven national company capable of extracting minerals, processing more of them locally and reinvesting profits into new mining ventures.
Nimba scales up rapidly
Nimba was created by presidential decree in August 2025 as Guinea’s first wholly national mining company and subsequently took control of the Tinguilinta bauxite mine and associated rail and port infrastructure at Kamsar.
The company said on August 6 that it had exported more than 4m tonnes of bauxite during 2026, supported by a 92-kilometre rail corridor connecting the mine to Kamsar.
Reuters reported on August 11 that cumulative exports since Nimba’s creation had surpassed 5m tonnes.
Nimba is targeting 10m tonnes of production in 2026 and annual capacity of 12m tonnes from 2027, giving the state a sizeable direct commercial position in an industry that has transformed Guinea into a critical supplier to the global aluminium market.

Bigger 14m-tonne ambition
Nimba’s ambitions go considerably beyond its immediate production targets.
Chief executive Patrice L’Huillier told Reuters that the company intends to produce at least 14m tonnes of bauxite annually within two to five years, while advancing plans for an alumina refinery, a gold operation and a base-metals project.
The distinction is important. Nimba’s latest formal near-term target is 12m tonnes annually from 2027, while 14m tonnes represents its broader medium-term growth ambition.
The company said in its August 6 corporate update that it is also launching feasibility studies for a 1.2m-tonne-a-year alumina refinery, signalling an effort to capture more value from Guinea’s mineral wealth before it leaves the country.
Guinea pushes beyond raw exports
The strategy fits President Mamadi Doumbouya’s wider push to move Guinea beyond its longstanding role as predominantly an exporter of raw minerals.
That agenda is already visible in Guinea’s drive for additional domestic alumina refining capacity and the broader Simandou 2040 industrial programme.
Nimba said 98 percent of its workforce is Guinean, reinforcing the government’s argument that greater national participation in mining can deepen employment, technical skills and domestic economic benefits.
Gold and base metals next
Diversification is already moving onto the agenda.
In March, Nimba signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Australia’s Resolute Mining to evaluate the potential co-development of gold projects in Guinea.
Resolute said the arrangement covers mineral-resource assessment, geological studies and consideration of potential large-scale gold production. Any eventual transaction would remain subject to further technical evaluation, binding agreements and regulatory approvals.
Nimba’s longer-term model is being compared with Saudi Arabia’s Ma’aden, which developed from a state-backed miner into a diversified international resources group.
L’Huillier told Reuters that Nimba envisages four major divisions spanning bauxite, alumina, gold and base metals.
Mines Minister Bouna Sylla said profits from Nimba’s existing operations would be reinvested to help finance the company’s diversification.
That approach places the company alongside Guinea’s vast Simandou iron ore development as another pillar of the country’s attempt to convert mineral abundance into greater industrial and economic power.
Whether Nimba can combine state ownership with the commercial discipline, capital investment and technical expertise required of a global mining group will determine whether Guinea has simply created another government company — or the foundations of a genuine African mining champion.
