GHANA’S Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, announced her resignation on Saturday in the wake of reports that money was found and stolen from her home by staff members. In a letter addressed to the president, Dapaah denied any wrongdoing.
The scandal came to light when two former household staff members appeared in court, facing charges of stealing cash and personal belongings from the minister and her husband between July and October 2022. Prosecutors revealed that the accused individuals used the stolen money to purchase houses and a vehicle, and also distributed some of it to their relatives. However, they have not yet commented on the accusations.
Reports in newspapers revealed that an astounding amount of $1 million, 300,000 euros, and millions of local cedis were allegedly stolen from Dapaah’s home. The revelation sparked outrage on social media, with many questioning the source of such vast sums of cash in a country where some members of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government have faced corruption scandals.
Cecilia Abena Dapaah had been serving as the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources since President Akufo-Addo took office in 2017, and she was retained after his re-election in 2021. The president has previously pledged to combat corruption within the government.
