Ghana’s 3tn gold claim dwarfs estimates

Keypoints:

  • 3tn ounces equals about 93.3m tonnes
  • WGC puts global reserves at 61,000 tonnes
  • USGS estimates Ghana’s reserves at 1,000 tonnes

GHANA’S Minerals Commission chief Isaac Tandoh has said the country has about 3tn ounces of gold ‘on the ground’, an extraordinary figure that, taken literally, would equal roughly 93.3m tonnes.

The comparison does not establish that Ghana lacks enormous undiscovered deposits. But it raises a fundamental question over what the 3tn-ounce figure represents, because international reserve estimates use much stricter geological and economic classifications than broad statements about gold believed to remain underground.

Claim dwarfs global reserves

Tandoh made the claim during Ghana’s presentation at the 2026 China Mining Conference in Tianjin, where officials were seeking fresh investment in the country’s minerals sector.

Three trillion troy ounces converts to approximately 93.3m tonnes of gold.

The World Gold Council (WGC), by comparison, estimates the entire world’s below-ground gold reserves at about 61,000 tonnes. It separately puts broader global gold resources at approximately 114,400 tonnes.

Taken literally, Ghana’s 3tn-ounce figure would therefore be about 1,530 times larger than the WGC estimate of all global gold reserves.

Even combining the WGC’s reserves and resources — roughly 175,400 tonnes — leaves the Ghana figure more than 530 times larger.

The WGC also estimates that about 222,600 tonnes of gold existed above ground globally at the end of the second quarter of 2026. Ghana’s claimed underground amount would be approximately 419 times that total.

USGS puts Ghana at 1,000 tonnes

The gap is wider when the comparison is confined to Ghana.

The US Geological Survey’s Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 estimates Ghana’s gold reserves at about 1,000 tonnes, with mine production estimated at 150 tonnes in 2025.

That means the 93.3m tonnes implied by a literal reading of the 3tn-ounce claim would be roughly 93,300 times the USGS estimate of Ghana’s reserves.

The difference is so large that the classification of the 3tn-ounce figure becomes critical.

Reserve or geological potential?

Mining terminology draws an important distinction between reserves, resources and broader geological potential.

The World Gold Council defines reserves as the portion of an ore deposit that can be economically extracted. Resources form a broader category and may include deposits supported by less geological information or less-developed economic modelling.

Tandoh described the 3tn ounces as gold ‘on the ground’. He did not, in the remarks, present a published reserve calculation.

The figure also predates the Tianjin conference.

Ghana Chamber of Mines Chief Executive Kenneth Ashigbey referred in a July 2026 speech to the challenge of responsibly extracting ‘over 3 trillion ounces of gold buried in the Ghanaian soil’.

That wording suggests a broad estimate of underground potential rather than a formally demonstrated reserve figure.

Africa Briefing found no published geological assessment from the Minerals Commission or Ghana Geological Survey Authority explaining how the 3tn-ounce figure was calculated.

Without such methodology, the claim cannot currently be reconciled with the much smaller reserve estimates published by the WGC and USGS.

Ghana sells a new mining model

The controversy emerged during a wider Ghanaian investment push in China.

Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah told the Tianjin conference that Ghana wanted investors to move beyond raw mineral extraction into processing, technology transfer, skills development, infrastructure and local supply chains.

That approach fits Ghana’s wider mining reforms.

Africa Briefing has reported on Accra’s push to transfer more mining activity to domestic contractors through its localisation drive, while its gold royalty reforms have also increased pressure on mining companies as the government seeks a greater share of revenues from high gold prices.

The investment push also comes as Ghana deepens trade and industrial ties with China.

The message from Tianjin is therefore clear. Ghana wants capital, technology and expertise — but on terms that leave more economic value inside the country.

What remains far less clear is whether the 3tn-ounce figure describes a scientifically established mineral resource, hypothetical geological potential or something else entirely.

Until the methodology is published, the number is best treated as an attributed official claim, not an established reserve estimate.

The extraordinary figure has nevertheless opened a much bigger question around Ghana’s mining pitch: how much gold does the country actually have?
