REMITTANCES to Gambia reached a record $776 million in 2024, representing a 4 percent increase from the previous year and contributing an impressive 31.5 percent of the country’s GDP. Central Bank Governor Buah Saidy shared these figures while addressing a national forum on diaspora financing, highlighting the pivotal role of Gambians abroad in sustaining the nation’s economy.

Remittances rival tourism

The rise in remittance inflows underscores their growing importance as a major source of foreign exchange, now rivalling Gambia’s traditionally strong tourism sector. Saidy emphasised that diaspora contributions have become critical for economic stability, offering a buffer against external shocks.

‘The steady increase in remittances reflects the strong connection between Gambians abroad and their home country. These funds are not only helping families but also supporting broader development,’ Saidy remarked during the forum.

Economic impact of diaspora contributions

At 31.5 percent of GDP, remittances provide Gambia with a significant economic cushion, helping to stabilise the economy amid global uncertainties. The funds are often used for household expenses, healthcare, education, and local investments, directly improving living standards and spurring growth.

Policy implications

The Central Bank’s data highlights the need for policymakers to explore strategies that maximise the impact of remittances. Initiatives such as investment incentives and improved financial infrastructure could help channel these funds into productive economic activities. Integrating remittance flows into broader development plans could further enhance their contributions to the nation’s growth.

Looking ahead

As Gambia continues to deepen its engagement with the diaspora, platforms like the national forum on diaspora financing are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future policies. Leveraging these contributions could bolster the country’s economic resilience and foster long-term development.
