Keypoints:

  • Fury and Joshua meet in Cardiff on December 11
  • Heavyweight rivals fight professionally for first time
  • Joshua reaches biggest stage since Nigeria tragedy

TYSON Fury and Anthony Joshua will finally meet in the ring on December 11 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, ending more than a decade of failed attempts to stage one of the most anticipated all-British heavyweight fights of their generation.

The contest will be the first professional meeting between the former world heavyweight champions and brings Joshua back to one of the biggest stages of his career after a turbulent period that included the deaths of two close friends and team members in a road crash in Nigeria.

Years of talks finally deliver fight

UK’s Sky Sports confirmed on Thursday</a> that the fight will take place at the Principality Stadium on Friday, December 11, after the location became a major sticking point in negotiations.

Joshua’s side had insisted that the contest should be staged in Britain, while New York’s Madison Square Garden emerged at one stage as a serious alternative. Fury repeatedly criticised Joshua over the delay and publicly floated the possibility of another fight with Oleksandr Usyk.

The breakthrough ends years of speculation surrounding two fighters who dominated British heavyweight boxing for much of the past decade but somehow never crossed paths professionally.

Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and president of the Saudi Boxing Federation, formally confirmed the agreement, declaring that ‘the time for talking is over’.

Both fighters subsequently shared promotional material confirming the event.

Netflix says it will stream the fight globally to its members at no additional charge, giving the showdown an international audience far beyond Britain. The undercard has yet to be announced.

Joshua rebuilds after Nigeria tragedy

For Joshua, the Cardiff date comes at the end of an extraordinary 12 months.

The 36-year-old knocked out American social media personality Jake Paul in the sixth round in Miami on December 19, 2025, returning from a 15-month absence from competitive boxing.

Just over a week later, Joshua was involved in a fatal road crash on Nigeria’s Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

His close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele were killed. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment.

Reuters reported that Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary findings pointed to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking before the vehicle carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck. Officials did not identify Joshua as the driver.

Police subsequently charged the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, with causing death by dangerous driving and other offences arising from the collision.

Africa Briefing previously reported on the fatal Ogun State crash and Joshua’s longstanding connection with Nigeria, where he spent part of his childhood.

Joshua later returned to the ring against Kristian Prenga in July, but his comeback nearly unravelled when he was knocked down twice in the opening round. He recovered to stop Prenga in the second and keep the Fury fight alive.

Heavyweight careers finally converge

Joshua first became IBF heavyweight champion by stopping Charles Martin in 2016 before adding the WBA crown with an 11th-round victory over Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley the following year.

He later added the WBO title by defeating Joseph Parker in Cardiff before eventually losing twice to Usyk.

Fury became world champion after beating Klitschko on points in 2015 and later captured the WBC title from Deontay Wilder. He also lost twice to Usyk before returning to action in 2026.

Fury defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov on points in April before stopping veteran Mariusz Wach in a July tune-up in Thailand.

The December contest therefore brings together two decorated heavyweights whose careers have repeatedly run in parallel without producing the fight supporters had demanded.

Cardiff brings Joshua full circle

The Principality Stadium is familiar ground for Joshua.

He stopped Carlos Takam there in 2017 before returning in 2018 to defeat Parker in their heavyweight unification contest.

But December’s occasion will carry different stakes. Neither man currently holds a world heavyweight title, yet their reputations, rivalry and history make the fight one of the largest commercial events available to the division.

There is also an unusual scheduling twist. Sky Sports has reported that organisers have considered staging the main event deep into the night to accommodate the international television audience, although the precise start time has yet to be confirmed.

Before then, Fury and Joshua are scheduled to appear together at a press conference at British Airways Arc in London on September 30, when the verbal rivalry that has simmered for years will finally move into the formal build-up to fight night.
