FORMER world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather made a surprise appearance at a political campaign event in Zimbabwe on Thursday, as part of the ruling ZANU PF party’s efforts to appeal to young voters ahead of the upcoming general election. The event took place in Mabvuku, one of the oldest townships in Zimbabwe located on the outskirts of the capital city, Harare.
Mayweather was warmly received by ZANU PF party supporters, who greeted him with song and dance. The invitation to Mayweather was extended by Scott Sakupwanya, a prominent gold magnate and ally of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Sakupwanya, who is seeking to reclaim a parliamentary seat from the opposition, expressed his satisfaction with Mayweather’s presence, saying, ‘People thought I was lying when I said I would bring Mayweather, but he is here. This shows that what I will promise in this election will come to pass.’
During the rally, the 46-year-old American boxing icon delighted the crowd with a public workout, showcasing his boxing skills through punching and rope jumping exercises. Mayweather also took the opportunity to observe three matches featuring Zimbabwe’s emerging boxers.
Several young attendees at the rally expressed their support for President Mnangagwa and pledged to vote for him in the upcoming election. White Marurame, a 34-year-old participant, shared his enthusiasm, stating, ‘I am happy to see Mayweather here in Zimbabwe; it is his first time coming here. I am registered to vote, and I am going to vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.’
The youth vote is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming election, with both the ZANU PF party and the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) targeting young voters. The election takes place against the backdrop of an ongoing economic crisis characterized by high inflation and a sharp depreciation of the local currency against the US dollar.
