Episode II of Corridor Perspectives – Live examined whether African–Caribbean businesses can combine profitability with ethical and sustainable business practices, with a special guest presenter joining ACSII's chairman and vice-chairman for the September 4 discussion

Keypoints:

  • Ethical conduct can strengthen commercial resilience
  • Businesses urged to turn purpose into profit
  • Africa–Caribbean corridor needs repeatable deals

THE Africa–Caribbean business corridor will need more than trade and investment to succeed, speakers at Corridor Perspectives – Live argued, warning that ethical conduct, trust and sustainability could prove just as important to long-term commercial growth.

Episode II of Corridor Perspectives – Live, held on September 4, 2026, asked whether African–Caribbean businesses can ‘do well by doing good’ and whether responsible business can become a source of competitive advantage.

Guest presenter frames business case

As special guest presenter, Africa Briefing Publisher Jonathan Offei-Ansah set out the episode’s central proposition: responsible business can make commercial sense when built into the way a company operates.

‘I believe the answer is yes. But it is not an automatic yes,’ he said. ‘Doing good will not rescue a poorly managed company. Sustainability cannot compensate for a weak product, and social impact cannot replace financial discipline.’

Offei-Ansah argued that sustainability should be treated less as a fashionable add-on and more as a question of competitiveness and, in some sectors, survival.

He pointed to agriculture, energy and tourism as areas where social or environmental gains can also deliver commercial returns. Cold storage can reduce food waste while strengthening supply chains; renewable energy can cut emissions and power costs; and hotels sourcing locally can retain more tourism income.

‘Doing good must be connected to how the company actually earns its money,’ he said.

Corridor needs institutions and deals

Offei-Ansah linked responsible business to the wider Africa–Caribbean Economic Corridor, citing Afreximbank’s expansion into the Caribbean as an example of institutions giving commercial substance to longstanding ties.

Afreximbank opened its CARICOM office in Barbados in August 2023 and later broke ground on an African Trade Centre there in March 2025 to support trade, finance and investment links.

‘This is what building a corridor looks like,’ Offei-Ansah said. ‘It means putting institutions, finance, information and business support behind the idea of Africa–Caribbean cooperation.’

But he warned that goodwill alone would not be enough.

‘We need to move from conversations about potential to repeatable commercial deals,’ he said, suggesting businesses start with shared problems such as food security, energy costs, access to finance or tourism leakage.

Cutting corners carries lasting costs

David P. A. Mullings, vice-chairman of ACSII, focused on the risks of companies pursuing immediate gains at the expense of communities and the environment.

He cited oil refineries dumping waste into community rivers, illustrating how cost-cutting that causes lasting harm can eventually damage trust, reputation and the business itself.

Mullings also referenced Sir Richard Branson’s ‘People, Planet, Profit’ approach as a framework for balancing financial success with wider responsibilities.

Circular economy offers alternative

David F. Roberts, chairman of ACSII, highlighted the circular economy as another route towards sustainable growth.

Rather than relying on extracting, consuming and discarding resources, circular approaches seek to keep materials in productive use for longer, reduce waste and preserve value.

For African and Caribbean economies facing climate risks, infrastructure constraints and expensive finance, that approach could offer environmental and commercial benefits.

Profit and purpose can reinforce each other

The conclusion from Episode II was not that companies should sacrifice profit for purpose. It was that responsible conduct, if tied to measurable business outcomes, can improve resilience, reputation and competitiveness.

As Offei-Ansah put it, the opportunity is to build companies whose positive impact makes them ‘more trusted, more resilient and more competitive’.

He concluded: ‘That is how shared history can become shared prosperity.’
