CONSTRUCTION of the long-awaited fishing harbour in Tanzania will start in June in the country’s southern Indian Ocean coastal district of Kilwa in the Lindi region, a cabinet minister announced on Sunday.
Mashimba Ndaki, the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, announced the start of the construction of the harbour when he visited the construction site and talked to residents in the area.
Ndaki said President Samia Suhulu Hassan’s administration has authorised the release of TSh100bn (about $43 million) to cover the initial construction costs of the harbour.
Zainab Kawawa, the Kilwa district commissioner, said preparations for the construction of the fishing harbor were in full swing.
In November 2021, Ndaki said the government had engaged a consultant from Italy to undertake feasibility studies for the construction of the first-ever fishing harbour in the East African nation.
