[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE construction of an international standard eight-lane tartan track in Ghana has begun following a ground breaking ceremony held by the developer, Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA).
MOBA is an association that brings together all ‘old boys’ of Mfantsipim, one of Ghana’s oldest and elite secondary schools, and creates for them a platform that will promote their common interests and bring development and progress to Mfantsipim and quality second cycle education in Ghana. MOBA also provides for other related matters connected with the wellbeing of members.
Slated for completion by September 2022, the project part of the MOBA’s plan to construct a sports complex to support the Mfantsipim School and the Cape Coast Metropolis as a whole to improve their sporting activities.
It is the third phase of the Association’s proposed four-phased Kwabotwe Centre for Sports Excellence project.
A basketball court worth GHC 1.2 million was the first phase, followed by a FIFA-standard football pitch worth GHC 1.6 million. According to Eric Yankah, Chairman of the Sponsoring Year Group (SYG), the project is a well-formulated five-year development plan to facilitate sports events in the city.
In addition, the association will provide the school with a 160,000-litre water supply system. Yankah said his organisation could not construct the track and overlook the school’s most pressing need.
