Keypoints:
- Cassava launches AI sovereign cloud for African governments
- Platform supports secure public services and local data control
- Includes AI training programmes and local-language models
CASSAVA Technologies has introduced a new sovereign cloud platform aimed at helping African governments build secure digital infrastructure capable of supporting artificial intelligence-powered public services.
The technology company said its National Sovereign Cloud (NSC) solution will allow governments across the continent to deploy cloud services, cybersecurity systems, and advanced AI computing infrastructure while maintaining control over national data.
The initiative is intended to help countries modernise public-sector services while ensuring that sensitive information remains within national jurisdictions.
Push for digital sovereignty in Africa
Across Africa, governments are accelerating efforts to digitise public services while strengthening control over national data infrastructure. Cassava’s new sovereign cloud platform aims to support that shift by providing secure, locally governed cloud environments that allow governments to deploy AI-driven services while protecting digital sovereignty.
Building secure government cloud infrastructure
According to Cassava Technologies, the NSC platform offers a comprehensive digital infrastructure stack designed for public-sector needs.
The solution includes cloud computing services, cybersecurity tools to safeguard government systems, and specialised computing infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale artificial intelligence applications.
The platform is also designed to integrate locally developed AI models, including language technologies that allow public services to interact with citizens in widely spoken African languages.
Such tools could support digital assistants, automated citizen support platforms, and other AI-driven government services aimed at improving public engagement.
Strengthening digital skills across the continent
Beyond infrastructure, Cassava plans to support digital skills development through the establishment of an AI Institute that will train both public-sector professionals and private-sector participants.
The company said the initiative will focus on developing technical skills needed to operate and build AI-powered systems, helping ensure African enterprises and individuals can participate fully in the digital economy.
By combining cloud technology with training and skills development, Cassava hopes to encourage innovation within local technology ecosystems while expanding the pool of AI developers and digital specialists across the continent.
Supporting financial inclusion and digital services
Cassava said the sovereign cloud infrastructure could also support applications in payments and remittances, areas considered critical to Africa’s digital transformation.
The platform is expected to enable governments to develop secure financial infrastructure capable of supporting digital payments and expanding financial inclusion.
AI-powered tools integrated into the platform could also help governments streamline administrative processes and deliver services more efficiently to citizens.
Collaboration with global cloud partners
The sovereign cloud initiative will be developed alongside international cloud partners, allowing African governments to combine global technology capabilities with locally governed infrastructure.
Cassava said this approach will allow governments to deploy advanced digital services while maintaining sovereignty over national data and digital platforms.
By integrating secure connectivity, AI computing power, and sovereign cloud hosting, the company aims to support governments in building trusted digital ecosystems.
Driving Africa’s digital transformation
Ahmed El Beheiry, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Technology and AI Officer at Cassava Technologies, said the platform reflects growing demand for digital infrastructure that balances innovation with national control.
‘Across Africa, governments are accelerating their digital transformation agendas and are increasingly focused on ensuring that data and digital infrastructure remain secure and sovereign,’ he said.
‘Our National Sovereign Cloud solution enables governments to develop secure AI and cloud environments that support national digital transformation while empowering African developers, enterprises and institutions to create solutions that address the continent’s unique needs.’
Cassava said it hopes the platform will help governments accelerate digital transformation while creating opportunities for innovation within Africa’s technology sector.
