Keypoints:

  • Air Peace capacity surges 54.7 percent
  • Nigeria market expands 37.4 percent
  • Lagos leads major African airport growth

AIR Peace has recorded the fastest capacity growth among the 10 largest airlines operating in the African market, adding more than 125,000 scheduled seats as a wider aviation expansion gathers pace across Nigeria.

The Nigerian carrier increased scheduled capacity by 54.7 percent year on year to 354,804 seats in September 2026, up from 229,412 in the same month last year, according to aviation intelligence company OAG. The surge returned Air Peace to the African market’s top 10 airlines by scheduled capacity.

But the airline’s expansion is part of a much bigger Nigerian aviation story. Nigeria recorded the fastest capacity growth among Africa’s 10 largest country markets, while Lagos posted the strongest increase among the continent’s 10 biggest airports. Together, the figures point to a sharp expansion in available airline capacity in Africa’s most populous country.

Nigeria aviation growth accelerates

Nigeria recorded 1.19m scheduled seats in September, a 37.4 percent increase from 864,100 a year earlier. That represented an additional 322,800 seats and the strongest percentage growth among Africa’s top 10 aviation markets.

Domestic capacity expanded even faster, rising 44.8 percent to 877,000 seats — an increase of 271,400.

OAG attributed Nigeria’s acceleration partly to currency reforms, a new aircraft-leasing agreement and growing confidence among airlines interested in serving the market.

The increase also comes as Nigerian airlines pursue larger fleets and more ambitious networks. Africa Briefing reported that United Nigeria Airlines is targeting London, Dubai and New York as part of an international expansion backed by additional aircraft.

Air Peace returns to top 10

Air Peace ranked 10th by scheduled capacity in September, immediately behind Air Cairo, which offered 360,502 seats.

Royal Air Maroc recorded the second-fastest growth rate among the top 10 at 19.2 percent, while Ethiopian Airlines remained the market leader with 2.09m seats, up 10 percent year on year.

The figures underline the gap Air Peace still faces in absolute scale despite its rapid expansion. Its scheduled capacity remains less than one-fifth of Ethiopian Airlines’ total.

Air Peace has nevertheless been widening its international footprint. The carrier has expanded its long-haul ambitions through developments including its London Heathrow breakthrough and the launch of direct Lagos-Barbados flights.

Lagos records fastest airport growth

Nigeria’s expansion is also visible at its main international gateway.

Scheduled capacity at Lagos rose 24.1 percent year on year to about 470,000 seats, making it the fastest-growing airport among Africa’s 10 largest.

Casablanca followed with growth of 13.5 percent, while Cairo remained Africa’s largest airport by scheduled capacity at 1.79m seats.

Africa adds more airline seats

Across Africa, scheduled airline capacity reached 25.8m seats in September, increasing 9.4 percent from September 2025.

International services accounted for 78 percent of total capacity and increased 8.9 percent, while domestic capacity rose 11.6 percent. Capacity to and from Central/Western Africa grew 16.1 percent year on year, making it the fastest-growing regional market.

The numbers provide an important indicator of airline expansion, but they should not be confused with passenger growth.

OAG measures scheduled seats offered for sale. The data therefore does not show how many passengers Air Peace actually carried, its load factors, revenues or profitability.

For Air Peace, the next test will be whether its rapid increase in available seats can translate into sustained passenger demand while the carrier competes against much larger African and international operators.
