IN a landmark development for Ghana’s burgeoning technology industry, Africa Data Centres, a subsidiary of Cassava Technologies group, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing ICT infrastructure across Africa by collaborating with the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). This strategic partnership signifies DFC’s sustained interest in supporting Africa Data Centres’ expansion efforts in nations eligible for DFC financing. The collaboration’s initial goal is to channel a portion of Africa Data Centres’ existing $300 million DFC financing commitment into the creation of an innovative data center in Ghana.
This ambitious investment project aligns with Africa Data Centres’ vision to fortify ICT infrastructure in Africa and facilitates the realisation of the Ghanaian government’s ambition to bolster its technology industry. The state-of-the-art data centre, proposed to provide up to 30MW of IT load, will be a pioneering venture in Ghana’s tech landscape.
Hardy Pemhiwa, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cassava Technologies, emphasised the remarkable progress Ghana has made in recent years, particularly in its burgeoning technology sector. He stated, ‘With a youthful and dynamic population, supportive government policies, and a thriving startup ecosystem, Ghana is poised to emerge as a prominent technology hub within the next five years.’
DFC’s CEO, Scott Nathan, underscored the significance of this partnership, noting, ‘DFC’s support for Africa Data Centres underscores our commitment to 21st-century infrastructure and the United States’ dedication to fostering secure and reliable ICT infrastructure that connects communities to global opportunities. Markets with trusted technology and dependable data storage can become magnets for businesses, creating jobs and fostering growth in high-potential sectors. The operationalisation of this planned facility will catalyse development and economic prosperity throughout Ghana.’
To solidify its position as a rising technology hub over the next five years, Ghana must continue to attract investment in its infrastructure. This partnership reaffirms the commitment of DFC, Africa Data Centres, and the Ghanaian government to enhance the nation’s ICT infrastructure.
The joint statement reflects Africa Data Centres’ unwavering commitment to the principle of inclusivity. Ghana stands to benefit significantly from the upcoming data centre, as it will facilitate the storage of locally generated data within the country’s borders. Furthermore, the presence of local data centres will act as a magnet, attracting additional investments from international digital entities, further propelling Ghana towards its digital aspirations.
Public-private partnerships are pivotal in fostering the overall development and expansion of economies. The collaboration between Africa Data Centres and DFC underscores the pivotal role technology will play in propelling Ghana towards becoming a digital economy. Pemhiwa added, ‘The Ghanaian government has astutely recognised the potential of the technology industry and has taken proactive measures to ensure its growth.’
As Africa Data Centres and DFC move forward, their partnership embodies a promising future for Ghana’s technology landscape, where cutting-edge ICT infrastructure will pave the way for sustainable development and economic progress.
