THE Executive Committee of The Arab-Africa Trade Bridges (AATB) Programme has announced the launch of a $1.5bn Food Security Programme aimed at addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity in the Arab and African regions amidst the ongoing global food security crisis. Recognising the critical challenge that food security poses on the international development agenda, the programme aims to provide targeted engagements and resources to tackle the specific challenges faced by member countries.
During the hybrid launch event held at the headquarters of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in Cairo on July 6, the Executive Committee, along with various partners of the AATB programme and top-tier regional and local media, highlighted the importance of the Food Security Program to member countries.
The Food Security Programme is designed around the four pillars of the AATB Programme: Trade, Investment, Insurance, and Infrastructure. Additionally, it incorporates a fifth element, capacity development and technical assistance, which serves as a cross-cutting theme. The program will provide funded and unfunded financial transactions related to food security, as well as capacity development and technical assistance services.
In the short term, the programme aims to address the immediate food security needs of member countries, particularly ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of essential food commodities. This objective acknowledges the urgency of meeting the immediate requirements of populations facing food insecurity.
Furthermore, by attracting investments, improving infrastructure, optimising value chains, and fostering cooperation, the programme strives to build resilient and sustainable food systems that guarantee the availability, accessibility, and affordability of nutritious food for all. These measures will contribute to long-term food security and support the socio-economic development of the region.
The Food Security Programme exemplifies AATB’s commitment to addressing the evolving priorities of member countries in crucial sectors such as health and food security for sustainable development. Recognising the significance of the food sector for human well-being, economic growth, environmental sustainability, and interconnected development, AATB aims to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting inclusive economic development among member countries through this programme and associated initiatives.
