DURING an event commemorating International Women’s Day in New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underscored the pressing need for accelerated action to attain gender equality worldwide. Guterres lamented the persistent discrimination and human rights violations faced by women, highlighting the daunting challenges that lie ahead.
‘At our current rate of change, full legal equality for women is some 300 years away,’ remarked Guterres, painting a stark picture of the timeline for achieving comprehensive legal parity.
Acknowledging the tireless efforts of millions of women and girls worldwide who are advocating for change, challenging stereotypes, and amplifying their voices, Guterres affirmed solidarity with their cause.
‘They are creating a better world for everyone. We stand with them today. We thank them. And we applaud all they have achieved,’ declared Guterres, recognising the pivotal role women play in driving societal progress.
Despite incremental progress, Guterres decried the sluggish pace of advancement towards gender equality, citing the persistent scourge of gender-based violence as a disgrace to humanity.
‘Change is long overdue,’ asserted Guterres, highlighting the disheartening statistic that less than 12 percent of speakers at the UN General Assembly last year were women, underscoring the need for greater representation and inclusivity.
Drawing attention to the disproportionate impact of global crises on women and girls, ranging from poverty and hunger to climate disasters and conflict, Guterres emphasised the urgency of addressing systemic injustices.
Guterres referenced harrowing testimonies of gender-based violence in regions like Sudan and reports of sexual violence against Palestinian detainees, underscoring the urgent need for concerted action to protect women’s rights.
Highlighting projections that millions of women and girls will continue to live in extreme poverty by 2030, Guterres condemned such forecasts as an affront to human dignity and a hindrance to global progress.
‘We must invest in women and girls, turbocharge progress, and build a better world for all,’ Guterres concluded, urging collective action to dismantle barriers to gender equality and foster inclusive societies.
