A 67-YEAR-OLD cancer patient in Angola is recovering well after undergoing Africa’s first-ever robotic surgery conducted remotely by a surgeon based in the United States, in what is being hailed as a historic leap in global health technology.
The groundbreaking operation took place on June 14 at the Complexo Hospitalar Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento (CHDC) in Luanda. The procedure involved a prostatectomy — the partial or complete removal of the prostate — and was guided from nearly 7,000 miles (11,000 kilometres) away by Dr Vipul Patel, the medical director of the Global Robotics Institute at AdventHealth hospital in Celebration, Florida.
In a statement released Wednesday, AdventHealth confirmed: ‘The procedure spanned nearly 7,000 miles, making it the longest-distance telesurgery ever completed.’ The Florida-based hospital described the feat as a major step forward in the evolution of medical practice and accessibility.
Multidisciplinary team ensured local success
Although performed remotely, the operation involved close collaboration between medical teams across continents. CHDC stated that a full surgical team — including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, biomedical engineers, and one of Dr Patel’s own colleagues — was present in the operating theatre to ensure the procedure went smoothly.
Carlos Alberto Masseca, director of CHDC, told AFP that the surgery ‘went well’, adding that the patient, Fernando da Silva, was discharged just three days later to continue recovering at home.
CHDC described the surgery as ‘the first teleassisted surgery performed in Angola and on the African continent’, marking a major achievement for Angola’s medical sector and setting a precedent for the rest of Africa.
Major milestone in African cancer care
Prostate cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the Global Cancer Observatory. The World Health Organisation has long warned of the continent’s limited access to early cancer detection and specialised treatment, a gap this latest innovation seeks to bridge.
Dr Patel described the procedure as a ‘stunning breakthrough — not just technologically, but in advancing global health equity’. He added: ‘This marks a critical step toward delivering high-quality surgical care to remote, rural, and underserved communities that have long lacked access. This is more than innovation — it’s a humanitarian leap forward.’
Health experts say the success of this operation opens new possibilities for the delivery of surgical care in regions with limited specialist availability, including other parts of Africa and remote areas worldwide. By leveraging robotic-assisted surgery and telecommunication technologies, more patients could receive timely, expert care without having to travel across borders or wait months for treatment.
